This week we are in the studio with Aimee of Aimee Pool Photography! Let’s take a peak into this warm, organic natural light studio in California.
Where is your studio located? Scotts Valley, California
Is your studio commercial or residential? My studio is located in a little retail shopping center
Do you use natural light, studio light or both? 100% Natural Light
How long have you been a photographer? I have been doing photography professionally for 6 years although it has been a hobby of mine since I was in High School. I got my first studio space two years ago and I was there for about a year. I have been in my current studio for a little over a year now.
How did you choose your space? I choose my studio because it offers amazing natural light and it has beautiful wood floors. The entire front of my studio is surround by sliding glass doors and windows, it is perfect and it gives me a lot of space to work with. I wanted a space that would be big enough to have a parent and sibling area so I was super excited that this space large enough for me to create this. My parents have their own little area that is set-up for them to relax in.
In three words how would you describe the style and feeling your studio evokes? Airy, warm and organic… Yes, it is airy and warm all at the same time.
What type of photography do you specialize in? How has your studio helped you grow your business, if it has? I specialize in newborns, maternity and children. I am also known in my area for my field and beach maternity sessions. My studio has been the best decision that I have ever made for my business and it has grown leaps and bounds since I opened my studio.
What is your favourite thing about your studio space? What makes it special to you? I love the natural light and the warm feeling that it offers. I recently added a parent area that is comfortable and relaxing for families and I am so happy to have it. My clients are always telling me how comfortable my studio is and many of my parents often take naps during their newborns session.
How do you keep your props organized and ready to use for sessions? I store my blankets on some shelves and I store my maternity gowns and children’s dresses in a wardrobe closet. I have two antique towel racks that I hang my wraps on and I just love them, they are probably one of my favorite things in my studio.
Advice and tips for opening a studio? A studio can be scary but it has been the best decision that I have ever made for my business. When looking for a studio I think that it is important that you find something that matches your style. I am a natural light photographer so I needed a space that would have lots of beautiful light flowing in. I looked for months before I signed the lease on my current studio. I wanted a certain look and feel along with the natural light so I think that it is important to not rush into something but to wait right space.
