This week we are in the studio with Jenny Cruger of Jenny Cruger Photography. Let’s take a look into this cozy and organically styled photography studio tour.
Where is your studio located? Franklin, TN (just outside of Nashville)
Is your studio commercial or residential? How many square feet? Commercial. Maybe 300-400 square feet max.
Do you use natural light, studio light or both? 100% Natural light
How long have you been a photographer? How long have you had a studio space? I have been shooting for about 14 years and in business for 4 years. I’ve had a studio space for 3 years; this one for 2 years.
How did you choose your space? I found this particular space accidentally. I was in a shared space in the building next door (also a historic home like this one, but not nearly as nice) and was looking at the space upstairs for all of us to move into. When that wasn’t what we needed, I came downstairs and saw this space and learned the current tenant was moving out soon. The light was gorgeous, the walls were already this perfect gray color, and the location in town was spectacular; I put down my deposit before she could even finish telling me all of the details.
In three words how would you describe the style and feeling your studio evokes? Cozy, calming, and natural.
What type of photography do you specialize in? How has your studio helped you grow your business, if it has? I specialize in maternity – young families, particularly the connection and love between mamas and their little ones. I photograph maternity, newborn, baby, and child sessions inside the studio. Having a studio has definitely helped me to keep to my defined style and give clients exactly what they see and love on my site, as well as giving me a space to hold ordering sessions, meet with clients to go over clothing, and host workshops for other photographers. I have considered giving up the space at times, but it’s helped my business so much, being able to do those things, and I just adore the space and the work I am able to do there.
What is your favourite thing about your studio space? What makes it special to you? It’s perfectly branded to me and my company and I can decorate however I want and have my own little piece of space that’s purely mine.
How do you keep your props organized and ready to use for sessions? I have a cube storage for blankets and wraps as well as a couple ladders I hang them on. I usually pull a few things and set up just before a session and it looks like a tornado has come through by the time we’re done. 🙂
Advice or tips for opening a studio? Be sure your business can support the expense, but at the same time if you think it will add to your business and get you further ahead, take the leap if you can!
